Adopt an Animal

Considering adding a pet to your family? If so, you need to consider where to get it. Adopt an animal and you will have a great family pet and do the right thing.

Adopt an Animal

It does not really matter if you adopt a pet from a rescue organization or a local animal shelter because the meaning is one – you are saving lives. In fact, adoption saves more than just the life of the pet adopted. Adopting from a rescue organization, you allow that organization to rescue another dog or cat for adoption at a public shelter. It, in turn, saves the lives of others at that shelter by creating space for new pets. You are making room for another dog or cat, when adopting from an animal shelter. You also allow other dogs or cats at the shelter to be kept for a longer period of time.

Adoption appears to be a truly continuous cycle of saving lives and it's the right thing to do. There are things to consider when deciding what kind of personality your new family member should have. The personality of an adult pet is already developed. You will be able to spot the characteristics you are actually looking for much more easily than with a puppy or kitten. Pet rescue organizations are able to assess the personality of any pet for adoption and carefully match with the right one for your lifestyle. And, of course, there is a lot more guesswork involved with a puppy or a kitten.

Still, if you want to adopt a dog or cat instantly fitting in with your family, then adopt an adult from a humane society or from a rescue organization or animal shelter. You may find useful to share thoughts and opinions with other pet owners as well. Dogs or cats that have had difficult beginnings or have been uprooted from their homes are very much likely to bond completely and deeply with their new human caretakers. Foster homes are used by many rescue organizations. Puppies and kittens for adoption are socialized with children and other dogs and cats. They are given basic obedience training before they go to a home.

Many dogs and cats in animal shelters and humane societies are already trained and housebroken. Many organizations offer post-adoption workshops and training classes as an added bonus for the potential pet owners. You will have the continued support to help you through any rough spots during the pet’s transition, when adopting from these animal shelters. Even if you consider your local pet store a very "reputable" one, they are almost surely getting their puppies and kittens from the following sources: 1) a puppy mill, or 2) a "backyard" cat or dog breeder.

"Backyard" kitten and puppy breeders are people who make some easy money by breeding their purebred dogs and cats. They often sell puppies and kittens through the newspaper classified advertisements. They don't know how to raise a properly socialized litter, if they don’t have a lot to say when asked about breeding for favorable health and temperament qualities. Everybody needs to take that into consideration when adopting a pet.

Another issue is a puppy mill. It is basically a purebred puppy factory farm. The puppies are just churned out and then sold to pet stores. The dogs are forced to breed at unhealthy rates and kept in small cages and. Female dogs in puppy mills are made to have several litters per year, which is extremely dangerous and cruel. This is the information that is important for each pet adopter to know. Their life was not necessarily “a bed of roses” before you found them.
